Who Told Him Women Were the Problem?
Two weeks ago, I was a guest on a podcast for young people interested in breaking into the business. Acting. Voice acting. Audio engineering.
There were about 40 participants on the call. At the start, I noticed how few women were present. A lot of young men.
I shared my story, talked about Building Doors, and addressed some of the biggest misconceptions about what it takes to work in voice over. Then we opened things up for Q&A.
A young man, maybe 19 or 20, raised his virtual hand. I’ll call him Brian.
Until that moment, Brian’s camera was pointed at his forehead. He sat in a dark room, hoodie up, headphones on. When he asked his question, he finally lowered the camera and said:
“I want to do voice over in animation, but I’m finding it hard to compete with women’s voices. I feel like I’m hitting a glass ceiling as a man.” He really said that with his whole chest.
Let’s pause for a moment.
