Unlocked: Two Men, Two Very Different Conversations Lessons, stories, & doors opened by campaign creator Christy Harst

This week two of my meetings stood out to me. Both were reminders of why Building Doors exists.

Both meetings were with middle aged men.One American. One Italian.

The American man has worked in the creative industry for years, producing thousands of commercials.

The Italian man has owned a US based e-learning translation company for more than 30 years and has thousands of clients around the world, including in the United States.

My meeting with the Italian man came first. It was actually just a 25 minute phone call. He originally reached out to me for a voice over quote. We ended up chatting for a bit and I never even mentioned Building Doors. Despite that, our conversation naturally made its way to gender in casting.

He told me:​

"I have so many clients and I can confidently say that when a US based client hires me, they always ask for a man to voice their project. But when my global clients call me, they almost always hire a woman. It's so crazy to me that with female leaders popping up in countries around the world, the US will not get on board."​

My internal thoughts were basically, "Bruh, tell me about it."
